Importance of MPOs and their Metro Areas: Click here. Metropolitan regions represent 84% of the nation's population and 90% of the GDP, and those statistics are only expected to rise. MPOs represent these regions, which are vital to the present and future economic competitiveness of our country.

Transportation Economic Land Use System: AMPO is partnering with USDOT and the New Jersey Institute of Trechnology to assist with deployment of the Transportation Economic Land Use System (TELUS).  TELUS is a free integrated, computerized information-management and decision-support system, designed specifically for MPOs and state DOTs. The main purpose of TELUS is to provide user-friendly, comprehensive, and efficient tools for managing TIPs, while meeting the planning and programming requirements of SAFETEA-LU. Another product of the TELUS program is TELUM, a model for evaluating the land use impacts of regional transportation improvement projects. 

Staffing and Administrative Capacity of Metropolitan Planning Organizations:  This document discusses the structure, staffing, governance, and operation of MPOs around the country. The report allows MPO leaders to compare their agency to others and identify potential solutions to organizational problems. This project, funded by the FY 2008 FHWA Surface Transportation and Environment Cooperative Research Program, consisted of a survey, follow-up interviews, and case studies from 133 MPOs.

The Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO) is a nonprofit, membership organization established in 1994 to serve the needs and interests of " metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs)" nationwide. Federal highway and transit statutes require, as a condition for spending federal highway or transit funds in urbanized areas, the designation of MPOs, which have responsibility for planning, programming and coordination of federal highway and transit investments. AMPO offers its member MPOs technical assistance and training, conferences and workshops, frequent print and electronic communications, research, a forum for transportation policy development and coalition building, and a variety of other services. The nine-member AMPO Board of Directors is directly elected by the membership, including the President and Vice President. Board members, who are MPO directors and local elected officials who are active members of their respective MPOs, play a vital leadership role in the affairs of AMPO. Full-membership in AMPO is open to all MPOs and associate memberships are available to all interested parties.
