Hidalgo MPO fights for Texas DOT program
The Texas based organization is currently designated as an Economically Disadvantaged County (EDC), which is a program the Texas DOT created to help areas like Hidalgo with federal funding. There is a 20 percent to 80 percent matching program. Depending on the project, the Texas DOT splits the 20 percent cost with municipalities, through the EDC program. At a recent Hidalgo MPO meeting, it was noted that the Texas DOT could potentially eliminate the EDC program, leaving the cities to cover the full 20 percent.
“These smaller towns can’t afford for this to go away,” said Andrew Canon, transportation director of the Hidalgo MPO. “It would be really tough.”
