Transportation Planners – TWO POSITIONS

The Mid-Region Council of Governments (MRCOG) Metropolitan Planning Organization division (MRMPO) is looking for two energetic and driven individuals to join its team as entry-level and mid-level, full-time Transportation Planners.  This position will involve working within an interdisciplinary staff team to perform land use and transportation planning activities in the Albuquerque Metropolitan Planning Area.

Entry-Level Position Responsibilities will include:

1. Providing assistance in long-range transportation planning activities; carrying out regional public participation and outreach activities including development of new strategies for soliciting involvement in the transportation planning process; dissemination of data and information via webpages, social media, and newsletters; development of documents and plans; special projects; provide oral presentations to governing bodies and other audiences; and other duties to assist MRCOG staff as assigned.

2. Managing the bike-share program, working with the vendor, and assisting with non-motorized traffic counts program including data collection, processing and analysis (approx. 50% of work time).

Mid-Level Position Responsibilities will include:

1. Participating in activities to support long-range transportation activities in the region including the development and production of the long-range transportation plan and networks,  data analysis, reports, and delivering presentations that inform regional leaders, planners and the general public about long-range planning issues.

2. Assisting with the collection of local land-use and development information such as zoning codes, comprehensive plans, area plans, and master plans and translating land use data into spatial databases.

3. Participating in land use and transportation integration including alternative scenario development.

4. Development of performance indicators that measure and track progress in the areas of land-use and transportation in the region.

5. Development of interactive online maps or mapping ideas that generate outside input in the transportation planning process and decision-making.

6. Participate in other planning activities and data requests as necessary.

General Skills:
Ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative analyses, and develop well-written reports and documents.  Effective interpersonal communication skills as both positions will involve extensive coordination with internal staff, state, local and tribal agencies and member governments, with occasional public speaking and presentations.  GIS skills and knowledge of federal transportation policies are preferred.

 

Qualifications:

Entry-Level Position: Associate or Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in geography, planning, civil engineering, or a related field.

Mid-Level Position: Bachelor’s degree required preferably in geography, planning, civil engineering, economics, or a related field and at least two (2) years’ experience in transportation system planning or land-use planning. Master’s degree and related coursework may substitute for one (1) year of experience.  Salary is dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Funding for these positions is primarily from FHWA and FTA metropolitan planning funds (052 & 053) and is within the MPO budget, with the bike-share component funded by RMRTD.
