Community and Regional Planner

The Greater Nashville Regional Council (GNRC) is seeking an experienced planner to join its dynamic Community and Regional Planning team. GNRC facilitates the development of regional plans for transportation, solid waste, economic development, and a growing list of additional products. At the local level, GNRC provides staffing support to county and municipal planning commissions and conducts studies or develops local comprehensive plans and zoning ordinances on a fee for service basis.

The duties of the Community and Regional Planner include:

  • Analyze the impacts of changing land use and socioeconomic characteristics on social services and infrastructure, with a particular focus on transportation and mobility;
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of proposed policies and capital investments to achieve community goals and objectives;
  • Prepare presentations and visualizations to engage the public and stakeholders in the planning process;
  • Assist with the preparation and drafting of planning reports, policy papers, and community and regional plans;
  • Coordinate with local governments and state and federal agencies including the TDOT, TN ECD, FHWA, and FTA on matters pertaining to regional planning; and
  • Build or strengthen partnerships with external partners in the public and private-sectors engaged in policy, advocacy, or planning initiatives related to transportation and land use issues.

The ideal candidate will have practical experience in the development of comprehensive plans at the local or regional level, have a solid grasp of national best practices for transportation and land use planning, possess strong public presentation skills, and be a critical thinker with an engaging personality.

A Master’s degree in Community and Regional Planning or a related field is preferred, along with at least two years of professional experience. A Bachelor’s degree and four years of professional experience may be substituted for the Master’s degree. Foreign degrees and credentials will be considered.

GNRC is the regional council of governments for Nashville and surrounding counties and serves as one of nine regional economic development districts established by the Tennessee General Assembly in 1965. GNRC’s mission is to assist local communities and state agencies in the development of plans and programs that guide growth and development in the most desirable, efficient, and cost-effective manner, while ensuring the continued long-term livability of the region.
