AMPO Executive Director Position

The Association of Metropolitan Planning Organizations (AMPO) is seeking an Executive Director to advocate for and support the MPO community. AMPO is a nonprofit, membership organization established in 1994 to serve the needs and interests of “metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs)” nationwide. AMPO offers its member MPOs technical assistance and training, conferences and workshops, frequent print and electronic communications, research, a forum for transportation policy development and coalition building, and a variety of other services. The Executive Director serves the Board of Directors and membership including (but not limited to) the following work program tasks:

  • Development and oversight of Annual Work Program and Budget
  • Proactively develop and present AMPO initiatives and positions to influence the direction of future legislation and regulations
  • Analyze the impact of current and anticipated legislation and regulations on MPOs.
  • Broaden MPO initiatives, to include consideration of other types of planning such as land use, climate change, the introduction of autonomous vehicles, performance measures, and other emerging issues
  • Coalition building and collaboration with other national organizations
  • Membership recruitment and retention
  • Membership tracking, communications and education
  • Effective organization and delivery of engaging Annual Conferences and Planning Tools & Training Symposiums
  • Effective oversight of the AMPO Research Foundation
  • Effective oversight and Management of Grants and Work Groups
  • Provision of technical assistance to member organizations and MPO stakeholders
  • Effective management and oversight of finances
  • Day-to-day management and allocation of staff and financial resources including improving the efficiency and operations of the organization
  • Preparation for, and support of, board meetings
  • Preparation for, and support of, committees (Policy, Technical, Ad Hoc Work Groups, etc.)
  • Annual preparation and execution of staff evaluations
  • Recruiting, hiring, and training of additional staff as needed and as approved in budget.


  • Master’s degree in a relevant field with a minimum of ten years of job experience in a management position or related field
  • Exceptional communication, writing and interpersonal skills, and an understanding of associations such as AMPO and MPO laws and regulations
  • Substantial experience managing a non-profit/advocacy organization preferred
  • Strong public speaking skills
  • Strong administrative, personnel, and organizational management
  • Demonstrated proficiency in strategic planning and fiscal management including budgeting and work programs
  • Demonstrated effectiveness as a manager, team-builder, and motivator who creates a climate of collegiality, trust, and dedication to the mission of the organization
  • Demonstrated success in collaboration and relationship building
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in organizations working with Boards and/or teams of senior executives
  • Familiarity with social media, websites and communication systems
  • Ability to attend night and weekend meetings as required
  • Experience working with MPOs is desirable, but not required.
